Underachievement Among College Students

The underachievement of high-ability students has been studied for decades. However, educators cannot always recognize all underachievers, because for high-ability students, their ability to succeed without much effort obscures their tendency to perform below their potential. One of the areas of underachievement not studied often is that of college students. This study interviewed seven college freshmen attending a small, public, academically challenging college whose academic achievement is neither commensurate with their abilities nor their previous achievement. Results of these interviews show that underachievement stems from insufficient preparation for college, and that motivation is the key to reversing this situation.
