Multicultural Issues: Considerations for Conducting Culturally Responsive Research in Gifted Education

A decade ago, Ford (1998) reported that less than 2% of publications in the field of gifted education focused on culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. Although more work has been published since that time, this area remains neglected. In this column, we present an overview of “culturally responsive research and researchers.” We propose that there is a need to examine the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed by social scientists and practitioners (e.g., teachers, school counselors, psychologists) who conduct research with CLD students and their families. This need is especially worth attending to when researchers are working with individuals from cultural backgrounds different from their own (Stanfield, 1985).
