The Benefits of Exploring Opera for the Social and Emotional Development of High-Ability Students

The lights dim. The conductor enters to enthusiastic applause. A hush fills the opera house in excited anticipation as the rousing overture to Bizet’s Carmen begins. Nearly 2,800 junior and senior high school students, plus an occasional elementary-aged child accompanied by an eager parent, gather to enjoy this full-length professional matinee, and, for many, it is not their first opera experience. “Carmen was beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside,” exclaims a 7-year-old patron as the curtain falls. When asked how she became interested in opera, she replies confidently, “I heard the music to Carmen when I was younger, and I always wanted to see it on the stage.”
